Dr. Daniel Cobb, Alex Bell Dental Dayton dentist discusses the difference between a crown and a bridge for a missing tooth

Missing teeth can affect your life in many ways. First, they affect functionality. Daily tasks such as biting, chewing, and speaking become increasingly difficult with gaps in your mouth. Second, they affect your appearance. Missing teeth can make you embarrassed to smile and have you missing some of life’s greatest pleasures.

Dental crowns are a type of prosthetic cap placed over a damaged or decayed tooth. They can be used on top of dental implants, after root canal therapy, or placed over a filled tooth to help preserve strength and functionality. Crowns can even be used with broken or chipped teeth to cover them and protect them from further breakage or potential extraction.

Dental bridges address missing teeth. Unlike partial dentures, dental bridges are non-removable. They utilize two crowns placed over the remaining natural teeth (abutment teeth). The teeth must be filed down first in order to place the bridge. An artificial tooth (pontic) between the crowns works to literally “bridge the gap” between natural teeth.

Because bacteria and plaque can accumulate underneath the crown and cause potential problems such as tooth decay and periodontitis, daily oral hygiene is vital in keeping your dental bridge healthy.

The process of receiving a bridge is typically completed in two visits. During the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared and impressions are taken and sent to the lab for fabrication of the bridge. In the interim, a temporary bridge will be placed. During the second visit, the temporary bridge will be removed and the permanent bridge will be checked for fit and functionality before being permanently cemented into place.

Advantages of Bridges:

  • They can restore functionality in your mouth allowing you to speak and chew properly.
  • They can help maintain the shape of your face, which can droop with missing teeth.
  • They can help restore a proper bite.
  • They can prevent the remaining teeth in your mouth from moving.

If you are in the Dayton area and you are currently dealing with missing teeth, call our office today to schedule a consultation. Dr. Cobb and his team will perform a thorough evaluation and develop a treatment plan that will restore your smile.
