Encouraging oral health in your child-tips from your dental care provider in Dayton OH

Sometimes knowing how to take care of your own teeth is not enough when it comes to passing along this information to your children. For the young members of your family, tooth brushing and flossing can seem like far more of a chore than they are interested in performing. Under such circumstances, the risk of tooth decay becomes amplified.

Because of the immense benefits excellent oral hygiene can have for children, we recommend that our patients bring their children in for dental care in our Dayton OH practice early on. Dental visits, however, are spaced six months apart, which leaves a lot of room for error in between. To improve your child’s chances for optimal oral health, consider how hygiene tasks can become more fun.

Kids are all about fun. This is how they learn, so parents can capitalize on this in teaching just about anything. When it comes to showing your child how to care for his or her teeth, the first step is to lead by example. From his or her earliest age, your child can watch you perform oral hygiene tasks daily. In this way, children see what they will be doing when they are old enough to care for their own teeth. Even when you are still brushing and flossing your child’s teeth for him or her, performing these chores together creates a more open and fun environment.

Making a game out of any chore is always a good idea when children are involved. For brushing teeth, games may include a child’s favorite stuffed animal or doll. Using a throwaway toothbrush, you can brush the toys teeth, and then your child’s teeth. This form of pretend is especially fun and engaging for young children.

Singing or music is also a much-favored method of learning for children. Since teeth should be brushed for a full two minutes, you could play fun music for this allotted time, or sing with your child. Just be sure that your child does not attempt to dance with the toothbrush in his or her mouth, and that singing does not get in the way of brushing each and every tooth.

Even when kids are old enough to brush their teeth on their own, they need help maintaining good habits. As we all know, children can easily forget the importance of performing a task when there are other, more fun things to do. For as long as necessary, be in the room with your child when he or she brushes and flosses. Offering rewards for good oral hygiene practices works well as children get older, keeping them motivated in continued practice.

Bringing your child in for professional dental care in our Dayton OH practice is just a small part of what leads to optimal oral health. For more tips on encouraging your child to brush, contact our office today.
