Steps for Kettering, OH area patients to avoid tooth decay

Nearly everyone knows that they are supposed to brush and floss their teeth daily. While many think the reason is to avoid a lecture from the dentist, the real reason is to help maintain both oral health and overall wellness. The biggest reason to brush and floss regularly is to avoid tooth decay. Tooth decay can be very dangerous if left untreated. It can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, infection, and even increase the risk of other health conditions.

Avoid tooth decay with tips from dentist in Kettering, OH

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay is damage to the enamel or inside of the tooth. It is caused when sugar is left on the tooth. The bacteria that are naturally found in the mouth feed on this bacteria and produce acid. If left on the teeth, it begins to eat away at the enamel and causes cavities. Cavities are irreversible damage to the tooth. If caught early enough, they can be filled by a dentist, but when left to progress they can be very damaging.

The best way to avoid tooth decay is prevention. We offer these tips to all of our patients:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice each day. In a perfect world, people should brush their teeth after every meal. We understand that this may not always be possible which is why it is essential to brush in the morning and in the evening. Make sure that you are using a soft-bristled toothbrush held at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and ask your dentist if you need to use toothpaste with fluoride.
  • Floss every day. Many of our patients admit that they while they do brush their teeth every day; they are not as diligent about flossing. Flossing helps remove particles that cannot be reached with brushing alone. We can help establish proper flossing technique.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Nutrition is extremely vital to oral health and wellness. Avoid sugary foods and candies that may stick to the teeth. If you do consume them on occasion, make sure to brush or rinse immediately after.
  • Stay hydrated. Water helps keep the teeth clean from food particles and acid.

Maintain regular dental check-ups. These appointments are important because you will receive thorough professional cleanings. Additionally, the dentist will be able to identify problem areas early.
