Residents of Dayton ask, “What causes your breath to smell bad?”

Bad breath, also called halitosis, can be very embarrassing for the people who have it. It may be overwhelming and persistent. This is different from “morning breath” which is a common and normal occurrence. Morning breath is caused by the decrease in saliva overnight while you sleep, and usually goes away after brushing the teeth and rinsing the mouth. Chronic bad breath can be prevented, but in order to do so it is important to discover the cause. The majority of the time, bad breath is the result of an unhealthy issue in the mouth.

Some of the most common reasons your breath may smell bad include:

Treatment for bad breath from dentist in Centerville
  • Lack of proper dental hygiene. Brushing infrequently, or even the wrong way, can leave food particles on the teeth and mouth that will eventually cause decay.
  • Infections. One of the most common symptoms of gingivitis (early gum disease) is bad breath. Infections in the throat, sinus area, or lungs can also make breath smell foul.
  • Food. Some foods can cause bad breath. Some of the most common culprits are garlic and onions. They contain sulfur compounds that are absorbed by your mouth into the bloodstream and released when you breathe out.
  • Drinks. Coffee and alcohol have a drying effect on the mouth, which decreases the amount of saliva and allows bacteria to thrive.

In addition to brushing and flossing your teeth every day, you can incorporate certain foods and beverages into your diet to combat bad breath

  • Drink plenty of water. Water helps rinse out the mouth and increase saliva production which constantly cleanses the mouth.
  • Chew sugarless gum. If you are unable to brush after eating, sugar-free gum can help clean food particles from the mouth. It also promotes saliva production.
  • Eat your vegetables. When eaten raw, foods such as carrots, red bell peppers, celery, and broccoli help to remove trapped food from teeth.

While your diet can aid in controlling bad breath, it is important to stay on top of regular visits with the dentist to determine the cause of it. If gum disease is responsible for your halitosis, it needs to be treated quickly to prevent it from advancing. Left untreated, gum disease contributes to tooth loss and overall health problems.
