Dayton, OH area dentist discusses diagnosis of periodontal disease along with treatment options

An estimated 50 percent of Americans suffer from some sort of periodontal disease. This can range from the milder gingivitis to advanced periodontal disease. Our team at Alex Bell Dental is experienced and trained in the diagnosis and treatment of all stages of periodontal disease.

Periodontal Disease Diagnosis from expert dentist in Centerville

Diagnosis: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease and is by far the mildest form of the condition. During the gingivitis stage, patients may experience chronic bad breath, inflamed gums, bleeding during brushing, and receding gum tissue. While all of this sounds unpleasant, the good news is that these symptoms can be reversed with proper treatment. Treatment for gingivitis may include one or more of the following:

  • Professional cleaning
  • Improvement in at-home oral care regimen including brushing and flossing
  • Replacement of any ill-fitting dental restorations
  • Scaling and root planing to remove bacteria and prevent buildup on the root
  • Antibiotics (oral or topical)

Diagnosis: Periodontal Disease

If gingivitis goes untreated, it can progress and the patient may develop advanced periodontitis. In certain instances, we may be able to use non-surgical treatment to halt tissue damage or bone loss, but the effects can be permanent. While we always strive to use the least invasive means of treatment, sometimes surgery is necessary.

This could include:

  • Pocket reduction surgery – This helps remove bacteria and close up the pockets that have formed between the gum and tooth.
  • Soft tissue grafts – This can help reinforce the affected gum tissue.
  • Bone grafts – This helps encourage regrowth of the bone, minimize the risk of tooth loss, and prepare a patient for restorations such as dental implants.

Periodontitis can be a potentially severe condition if left untreated. The best thing to do if you suspect gum disease is to schedule a check-up at Alex Bell Dental as soon as possible.

Preventing a gum disease diagnosis can be done through proper oral hygiene and regular dental care. By keeping the teeth and gums clean and free of plaque build-up, patients can greatly minimize the risk of gum disease.
