Centerville area dentist helps patients identify the symptoms of gum disease

It’s common knowledge that you should brush and floss your teeth every day. Most people understand this as a way to prevent tooth decay (cavities). Did you also know that improper oral hygiene could lead to gum disease? Gum disease not only affects the health of the mouth, but it can also put you at an increased risk for other conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.

The best way to prevent gum disease is to maintain good oral health and visit with your dentist regularly. In addition, knowing the symptoms of gum disease can help you identify the problem early, when it is still reversible.

Gum disease can be broken down into the following stages:

Gingivitis

During this first stage of gum disease, patients may experience red or inflamed gums, bleeding of the gums when brushing, and chronic bad breath. It is usually caused by improper brushing and flossing. When this occurs, plaque will build up around the teeth and gum lines, and trap bacteria. The good news is that gingivitis is treatable. For the most part, gingivitis can be reversed through a professional deep cleaning of the mouth and an improvement in oral hygiene at home. If left untreated, it will eventually progress to periodontitis.

Periodontitis

This advanced form of gum disease occurs when gingivitis is left to progress. Periodontitis is characterized by deep pockets between the teeth and gums, receding gums, and teeth that are loose or shifting. Bacteria will continue to become trapped in the pockets and can destroy the bone structure in the mouth. Periodontitis is one of the most common causes of adult tooth loss. Aggressive treatment is often needed to try to save the teeth and restore health to the mouth.

In addition to poor oral hygiene habits, there are certain factors that can increase a person’s risk for gum disease. Cancer or diabetes, pregnancy, smoking, and certain medications can all increase the chances of gum disease. If you are in Centerville, or the surrounding areas, and feel like you may be experiencing symptoms of gum disease, call Alex Bell Dental today to schedule an appointment.
