Dayton OH area dentist discusses stiff jaw and other side effects after wisdom tooth extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental procedure. Sometime during the late teen years or early 20s, these third molars begin to appear. In some cases, they erupt just as any other tooth, but in many cases they are impacted and don’t have enough room to erupt properly. Impacted wisdom teeth can partially erupt, or not erupt at all and can cause problems for other teeth.

In many cases, patients with impacted wisdom teeth will need to have them extracted. If you notice pain, infection, cysts, or damage to adjacent teeth, it’s important to be seen for an evaluation. Removing the impacted wisdom tooth can prevent future dental problems.

Wisdom tooth extraction is done under anesthesia. The type of anesthesia used depends on the complexity of the extraction. You will be conscious during the procedure, but the sedative will make you extremely relaxed and comfortable. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure.

The extraction itself involves several steps. The doctor will carefully expose the wisdom tooth and bone, dividing it into sections before removing it. Once it is removed, the area will be thoroughly cleaned. Stitches are then used to close the tissue.

Following the wisdom tooth extraction, you may experience common side effects like stiffness of the jaw, pain, bleeding, or swelling. You can manage these symptoms through the following steps:

  • Rest – It is important to take it easy after your surgery. You may resume most normal activities the following day, but avoid strenuous exercise and activities for at least a week as they can cause the blood clots to fall out of the socket.
  • Stay hydrated – Stick to water. Avoid alcohol and carbonated or hot beverages for at least a day.
  • Eat soft foods – Eat things such as applesauce, pudding, and yogurt during the first 24 hours after your extraction. You can start chewing semi-soft foods after a few days.
  • Stay comfortable – Take pain medication as prescribed.
  • Manage swelling – An ice pack can help with pain management as well as swelling.
