Temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMJ and TMD, is often wrongly diagnosed as migraines or an array of other illnesses. This complaint is characterized by misalignment of the teeth, as well as the joints and muscles of the jaw. Since the nerves and muscles of the jaw work with those of the face, symptoms are often felt throughout the head. In some cases, the entire body is affected.
The symptoms of TMJ include dental issues such as tooth grinding, locking jaw, jaw pain, clicking and popping noises, crowded teeth, loose teeth, and receding gums. Headaches often accompany these indications. Patients may also have difficulty swallowing due to significant muscle tension in the neck, face, and jaw.
Ringing and congestion in the ears is also another sign of TMJ. Back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as numbness in the fingers and arms is seen in patients with this condition. For those who are not able to find relief from the chronic pain, depression is often noted.
It is sometimes possible to pinpoint the cause – a close relative might have TMJ, or the patient may have been injured in an auto accident or some other type of trauma that signaled its onset. However, many people will never know how they came to have TMJ and TMD.
