Why treatment for TMJ in our Centerville practice involves multiple modalities

Most people think of their dentist as the person who cares for their teeth and gums. Dr. Cobb also extends his expertise to the treatment of TMJ disorder, a condition that tends to produce pain, clicking, and limited range of motion in the jaw.

Various factors can lead to the irritation of the joints located at the back of the jaw, called the temporomandibular joints. Gum chewing has been named one possible culprit, but often we find that a patient grinds his or her teeth at night, resulting in undue stress on the jaw and TMJ disorder.

The approach we take to the treatment for TMJ in our Centerville practice considers the whole body. The reason we do this is because we understand what occurs in one part of the body can trigger a process somewhere else. At Alex Bell Dental, we go beyond treating symptoms with an oral appliance. A customized device worn at night is just the beginning of our recommended treatment plan. This device provides a buffer that reduces stress caused by clenching or grinding teeth during sleep, and changes the bite between the upper and lower jaw to fit as it should.

Chiropractic is also a modality that we discuss with our patients facing TMJ disorder. This form of alternative medicine is highly effective as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan because it complements our measures to relieve tension in the jaw muscles. A chiropractor uses trigger points, areas of muscle fibers located around the joints, to relieve tension and stress on the temporomandibular joints.

The neck is also assessed for misalignment, which can occur due to poor posture or minor injury. This step is taken because tightness in the neck and shoulders can trigger tension around the joints in the jaw. Reducing stress from its origin, chiropractic helps TMJ patients experience relief from discomfort.

The final touches of well-rounded TMJ treatment involve massage therapy. The combination of our custom-made oral appliance, which corrects misalignment between the upper and lower jaw, chiropractic adjustments, which relieves tension and undue pressure from the points of origin, and massage therapy create a powerful force against TMJ disorder.

If you or a loved one is experiencing the discomfort of TMJ disorder, contact us for assessment and a customized treatment plan.
