When Is Oral Surgery Needed?

What is oral surgery?
In a nutshell, oral surgery refers to operations your dentist performs within your mouth. Most dentists can perform simple oral surgery, such as wisdom tooth removal. For complex treatments such as jaw reconstruction, you may need an experienced oral surgeon. Dr. Cobb and our team have ample experience with simple and complex oral surgery procedures and can meet all your dental surgery needs.
When is oral surgery needed?
The following are some common procedures requiring oral surgery:
- Surgical tooth extraction
- Wisdom teeth removal
- Dental implant surgery
- Bone grafting
- Soft tissue grafting
- Corrective jaw surgery
- Full mouth reconstruction
As you can see, many of these procedures are routine treatments. We’ll review your procedure with you in advance so you’ll know what to expect and can prepare accordingly.
Is oral surgery painful? Will I be awake for my procedure?
Depending on your procedure, Dr. Cobb will use local or general anesthesia to keep you from feeling discomfort or pain. We also offer sedation options to help you fully relax during your surgical treatment. We’ll discuss these options with you when planning your treatment and decide whether it’s best for you to be awake or asleep during it.
Feeling pain or soreness for several days after your surgery is normal. You can take a prescription or OTC pain medication to manage these symptoms. If you feel excessive pain, bleeding, or inflammation, contact our office right away so we can remedy your situation.

How long does oral surgery last?
That depends on your procedure. Most procedures are completed in one day, taking several hours at most. You may stay at our office for an hour or two after surgery to recover from the anesthesia. Depending on your treatment, you may need someone to drive you home after your procedure.
How long does it take to recover from oral surgery?
Again, that depends on your procedure and your body’s capacity for healing. For most procedures, initial healing can occur fairly quickly, within several days to a week, so that you can return to your normal routine. Dr. Cobb will give you detailed post-op instructions to expedite your recovery. We recommend full rest for a day or two after your treatment to promote quicker healing.
