Improving the look of your smile with dental crowns in Centerville, OH
Most people believe that cosmetic dentistry just focuses on the aesthetics of your teeth. While the ultimate goal is positive changes to your smile, cosmetic dentistry solutions are also effective to restore functionality to your mouth. It’s no secret that missing, damaged, or misaligned teeth can have a significant effect on your appearance. It can also put the health of your mouth in jeopardy. Dental crowns are a cosmetic procedure we offer at Alex Bell Dental to restore form, strength, and appearance to the tooth.
Dental crowns are placed over an existing tooth. They are effective for teeth that cannot be repaired by a filling alone. Crowns can be used for a variety of reasons:
- As the anchor to a dental bridge – Dental bridges are used as a replacement for missing teeth and they utilize crowns on top of existing teeth to hold the false teeth in place.
- To cover an implant.
- In conjunction with root canals – Teeth can become brittle after a root canal, which can leave them susceptible to cracking and chipping. Crowns can strengthen the teeth and protect them from breakage.
- They can also be used cosmetically to cover discoloration or misshapen teeth instead of porcelain veneers.
Dr. Cobb begins by taking an impression of the tooth receiving a crown. This allows the crown to be fabricated and inserted at a subsequent appointment. An interim crown will be placed with temporary cement to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being made. The crowns are made of porcelain and can be matched to color of your existing teeth to provide a natural look.
Crowns are a long term solution that can last anywhere from five to fifty years with proper care. A good daily oral hygiene regimen along with avoiding bad habits such as clenching and grinding teeth will help prolong their life.
Dr. Cobb will remove the temporary crown and make sure the color and fit of your permanent crown is correct. Then the new crown will be cemented into place.
If you are currently have broken or damaged teeth, call Alex Bell Dental today to schedule a consultation. Dr. Cobb will work with you to determine the appropriate cosmetic or restorative solution to fit your situation.
