Gum therapy treatment for patients in Centerville with periodontitis

Gum disease is a serious condition that, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss, bone degradation, and an increased risk for other disease. When it comes to gum disease, prevention is the primary focus. In general, gum disease can be prevented with proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits. It is also important to understand the signs and symptoms of gum disease.

In its first stage, gingivitis, gum disease is most notably characterized by the bleeding of gums while a patient brushes his or her teeth. Other symptoms include swollen or red gums and bad breath. If patients notice any of these symptoms, it is important to schedule an appointment. When treated early, the effects of gingivitis are reversible.

If gingivitis goes unnoticed or untreated, it will progress to periodontitis. At this stage, the disease can cause irreversible damage to the teeth, bones, and gums. The gums will begin to pull away from the teeth, leaving deep pockets where plaque and bacteria become trapped. Teeth begin to shift and the risk of infection is high.

The most common treatment for periodontitis is scaling and root planing, also known as gum therapy. This procedure involves cleaning the area between the teeth and gums, all the way down to the root of the tooth. Local anesthetic is used to numb the area. During the procedure, special antibiotics are also placed into the pockets to treat infection and speed the healing process.

Gum therapy can be a very successful way to halt the progression of gum disease. If patients continue with good dental care at home, the gums will eventually heal and become pink and healthy again. Patients may have to increase the frequency of dental checkups following treatment to help ensure the health of their teeth and gums.

Improving oral health and helping our patients in the Dayton-Centerville area enjoy a healthy life is our focus at Alex Bell Dental. We encourage all of our patients to maintain good eating habits, quit smoking, and engage in physical activity to ensure their body and mind stay healthy.
